The Shukishvili Georgian National Ballet is unlike any comparable National Ballet in the realms of Bolshoi, Paris, Royal and the like. It is for Georgia what Punk once was for England. In a region governed by Russian political interests, the Ballet is a symbol of cultural resilience and a voice for artistic freedom in a society where creative freedoms are curtailed. Their heritage is embodied in the narrative story-telling that marks the Ballet’s unique style. They incorporate a visually rich mix of folk dance into neo-classical techniques that combine athletic acrobatic movements to realise a dynamic, physically demanding performance style.

The interview with Chief Choreographer, Iliko Shukishvili and behind-the-scenes photo essay of their rehearsal was intensely exciting. To be amongst a dance troupe, so evidently proud of their role, back-dropped by a two-story high Ukrainian flag.

Iliko is a household name in Georgia, loved for the innovation with which he has forged a future for the Ballet he inherited.
